This is the part of fitness and weight loss that plagues us all – the inevitable and very frustrating plateau. You’re moving along your weight loss journey and noticing your body change, when suddenly the results stop coming and you stay the same. Suddenly you are faced with the reality that you are no longer losing weight anymore, and the scale is stuck on certain number. Knowing how to overcome the weight loss or fitness plateau (in advance) can really help you to proactively approach the problem.
If you find yourself stuck at a plateau (as so many of us do), then you need to mix things up a little bit. Start by looking at your nutrition and your eating because that’s a common source of many problems. Many of us go on a health kick, but that ultimately means that we eat the same few things day after day. Eating healthy foods doesn’t mean having to eat only grilled chicken and salad every single day. Mix it up and try out different healthy versions of meat based recipes and new healthy foods and greens each week.
The variety will help you to change and keep you interested and motivated. You may also find that you need to eat more often throughout the day. This is counterintuitive for many, but if you are stuck at a plateau then you may not be eating often enough. Rather than aiming for three meals a day (or even skipping meals) as so many of us wrongly do, aim to eat smaller meals more frequently, each day. This will boost your metabolism, keep you energized, and ensure that you don’t give into temptations or food cravings.
You also need to be sure that you are mixing it up at the gym and in your training too. If you perform the same fitness workout every single time, then your body will become complacent. It will stop responding to the exercise because it expects this very same workout, every time. Breaking through the plateau means you’ll need incorporate variety and intensity into your daily workouts. Work out harder and smarter, and maximize every minute that you are there. If you incorporate variety at the gym along with the changes in nutrition, you will break through that fitness or weight loss plateau once and for all.
